The sun shines on Grow construction

Winter took a short holiday this week and our Grow Community construction site was aglow in the low afternoon sun. The worksite hummed with construction activity as we round out the northernmost buildings in the new Grove neighborhood.

Windows were trimmed and sealed at the Salal building, while interior finishes including doors and fixtures went in to complement the beautiful hardwood flooring and generous south-facing windows.
Outside, workers added the spacious enclosed patios featured with many units.

New sidewalks were poured along Wyatt Way, a great amenity for surrounding neighbors as they skirt the north side of the Grow Community grounds.

And up on the roof, the Juniper building’s 44kW solar array took shape with the installation of inverters and related hardware, with panels to be installed next week.

Construction on the Elan townhomes and the Tsuga that bound the Grove neighborhood also made great headway, as work shifts south toward the third and final neighborhood, the Park.

Bainbridge Island’s PHC Construction to Build South Sound’s Largest Indoor Climbing Facility

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND (January 18, 2016)  - PHC Construction of Bainbridge Island has been selected to build the largest indoor climbing facility in south Puget Sound, promising more space and new heights for climbing enthusiasts year round.

The 12,500-square-foot facility, just off I-5 in Lacey’s Hawks Prairie neighborhood, follows the recent merger of Purdy Fun Climbing and Warehouse Rock Gym. The Olympia-based fitness centers joined operations last year after developing strong a following among area climbers over the past decade. 

General contractor PHC Construction of Bainbridge Island is a regional leader in commercial construction and sustainable building including two-time winner of the Master Builders Association’s “Green Hammer Award.”

“As a commercial contractor with metal building division, this project is a perfect fit.  We’re hoping this project leads to more projects in the South Sound,” said Clay Johnson, project manager for PHC Construction. “The Purdy Fun Climbing Center will be a first rate facility and we’re honored to be selected to build it.”

The new all-weather facility, slated to open in Summer 2016, will be three times larger than the present layout, with double-height climbing walls and a dedicated bouldering area. The purpose-built center will house the Warehouse Rock Gym and offer ample parking for patrons.

Features will include:
•    More than 10,000 sf. of climbing, about two-thirds roped and one-third bouldering
•    Lead climbing up to 50 ft.
•    Space for cardio equipment and other programs such as yoga
•    Advanced climbing instruction
•    Leadership development courses for the business community

Climbing walls will be designed by Vertical World’s Elevate Climbing of Seattle.

Ground was broken on the new facility last week.

“This groundbreaking ceremony celebrates achievement of a significant milestone.  Construction of this new facility moves us closer toward achievement of our fundamental mission, to offer our customers the ultimate indoor climbing experience,” said Mike Boyer, Purdy Fun Climbing Corp. and Warehouse Rock Gym president. “Our plans reflect years of research on the industry and the latest design trends. Climbers from all over South Sound will find new challenges and rewards with every visit.”

The current staff will stay with the gym, and director Esteban Pinto, Director of Operations, will continue managing day-to-day operations. Joe Hyer of Percival Consulting Group, original founder of the Warehouse Rock Gym, has also been retained to support and advise the new operation as it develops. Members of the original Warehouse Rock Gym ownership serve as corporate board members.

The new facility will be located in the Hogum Bay Business Park, 8276 28th Court NE in Lacey. 

Business operations will continue in the current gym space at 315 Jefferson Street, downtown Olympia.

Lotakis honored in Kitsap Sun’s ‘20 Under 40’

PHC/Asani CEO, Greg Lotakis joins august company as a “20 Under 40” honoree for 2015.

The annual awards, sponsored by the Kitsap Peninsula Business Journal and Kitsap Sun newspaper, recognizes “the best and brightest young business leaders who make Kitsap a greater place to live, work and play.”

Honorees were feted at a gala evening this week at Bremerton’s Admiral Theatre. Author and motivational speaker Dan Weedin offered a stimulating address on leadership preceding the introduction of winners.

 “It is an honor to be considered and selected for Kitsap Sun’s ‘20 Under 40’ for 2015,” Greg says. “I continue to find myself surrounded by amazing people – coworkers, friends, and family. I am truly grateful for them and know my success is tied to their support of me. My congratulations to the other nominees and selected candidates. Here’s to a bright future for our communities.”

PHC earns another Built Green Hammer award for Grow Community

For the second straight year, Grow Community and PHC Construction have earned the prestigious Built Green Hammer Award.

Sponsored by the Master Builders Association, the awards recognize outstanding, environmentally sustainable residential projects. Grow Community earned top honors in the Builder, Multifamily 1-50 Units category.
 
The award was presented this week at the annual Built Green Conference at Shoreline Community College. 

“We’re doubly proud to win a Built Green Hammer Award for the second straight year,” said PHC’s Marty Sievertson. “Our goal has always been to show what’s possible in top-quality, environmentally conscious construction. As Grow Community’s second phase, the Grove, sees occupancy this fall, we think buyers will really appreciate the care we’ve put into the project and that the Master Builders have recognized once again.”

August Grow Community Construction Update: Under every roof, a different story. Sometimes the roof is the story.

Work proceeds apace around the Grow phase 2 worksite this month, with eight buildings underway and in different stages of completion. Framing, drywall and roofing are the story at the Salal, Juniper and Elan buildings, those closest to occupancy projected for this fall.

At the Tsuga, the concrete deck will be completed the first week of September with framing to follow. Three of four single-family homes now have their foundations and floors ready to go, again with framing to begin soon.

In the middle of it all, we’re about to begin grading for the Grove, our newest neighborhood’s signature central greenway.

We’re excited to begin planting this beautiful space, the centerpiece of Grow Community phase 2.

Grow Community a paragon of the ‘New Urbanism,’ Professional Builder magazine says

Public engagement, eco-friendly designs, affordable options, and diversity of home styles and offerings are hallmarks of the New Urbanism, the most significant planning movement of recent times.

Grow Community is a paragon of this forward-thinking ethos, Professional Builder magazine says in its new issue.

 In the article “The Seaside Effect” (a nod to the first New Urbanist community, Seaside, built in Florida in 1980), Pro Builder fetes Grow for such enlightened features as shared pea-patch gardens, energy-efficient construction and rooftop solar power.

Proximity to Winslow town center – just a 5-minute walk from the heart of the neighborhood – allowed project designers and now residents to move beyond the demands of an automobile-centric lifestyle, toward healthier and more sustainable alternatives.

“We didn’t need to provide anything other than a residential fabric,” Jonathan Davis, Grow’s phase 1 architect, tells the magazine.
